Meet Hoang Nguyen, Senior VP of Mortgage Lending
There are systems & processes, technologies, and data platforms – all running seamlessly under the radar every single day. These systems support our mortgage division and, most importantly, help our dedicated loan officers serve our clients each day.
And there’s someone overseeing all of this & ensuring everything runs beautifully & efficiently.
That someone is Hoang “Benny” Nguyen, Senior VP of Mortgage Lending. He’s been a Gulf Coast Bank Home Loans Division family member for more than a decade!
We asked Hoang to share his experiences as a leader overseeing our mortgage technology division.
What Originally Led You to Pursue a Career in the Mortgage Business?
I took business classes in college because there are many opportunities in this career path. I graduated with an accounting degree from the University of New Orleans and then started working at a small CPA firm with about 6 employees.
After a short tenure at the CPA firm, an opportunity opened up at Gulf Coast Bank. I was interested because the CPA firm was small and there was little room for advancement.
Working for a bank would open many opportunities for me to expand my career. So, I applied for the job and interviewed. A few days later, Gulf Coast Bank extended their offer to me and I gladly accepted. From that moment on, my whole career has been focused on the mortgage lending industry.
What is Your Mission in Your Role at Gulf Coast Bank?
I lead the group that handles secondary investor marketing and all of the technology and data that supports the bank’s mortgage division. Our mission is to predict, connect, and adapt to the latest technologies in banking. What we do happens behind the scenes. And that’s the way it should be. We advance efficiency and leverage technology to better serve our clients.
Gulf Coast Bank clients rate their mortgage experience as a 4.9 out of 5 – and that means they’re really happy. That’s what we like to hear. It’s important for our team members to know that what they do every day makes a real difference and has a positive impact in our community.
What Do You Enjoy Most About Your Position?
I thoroughly enjoy overseeing the secondary marketing department. There’s so much more to it than some might know. I handle hedging, trading TBAs (forward mortgage-backed securities), minimizing lock risks, and selling loans to GSEs (Government-Sponsored Enterprises) and aggregators.
How has Your Experience in Mortgage Shaped Your Values and Perspective?
Having a career in the mortgage industry has totally changed where I am today. Starting a career in the mortgage lending industry help me purchase my first home at the age of 22 because I learned there are so many products available for first time homebuyers.
The happiness and excitement of owning your first home is a feeling of great accomplishment.
I’m proud to be a member of the mortgage banking team at Gulf Coast Bank because I know my job is essential to the path of homeownership.
What Do You Enjoy Doing in Your Downtime?
I have a 1-year-old daughter who keeps me busy! I also enjoy playing volleyball weekly in a local league. I like to snowboard and fish and I love to travel.
I’m also a proud member of the Greater New Orleans Inc. (GNO, Inc.) NextGen Council of Business Leaders. Our membership represents a range of industries in Greater New Orleans and we’re committed to establishing partnerships among local businesses & community organizations as well as furthering the economic interests of our region.
